How Green Is Your Pool?

The right fix depends on how far gone it is. Every pool's different though size, equipment and how long it's been neglected all affect the actual timeline, so think of these as rough stages, not promises.

STAGE 1

Just Turned Greenish

Caught early, before algae has really taken hold. Often just a shock treatment away from clear!

Fastest Fix

STAGE 2

Fully Green

Algae has spread through the water. Needs shock treatment, brushing and a few follow-up visits.

Moderate Job

STAGE 3

Full Swamp

Sat for months or years.  Recoverable in almost all cases but will take time or a drain & acid wash.

Most Involved

Exact timing depends on your pool's size, equipment and how long it's been left.

Why Does a Pool Turn Green?

A green pool is almost always an algae outbreak and it doesn't take long to get out of control. Algae loves still water, so once it starts growing it can spread within days. The most common triggers we see across Brisbane pools:

Low Chlorine

Blocked Baskets

Poor Circulation

Storm Debris

Bad Chemistry

Faulty Equipment

Green Pool Recovery FAQs

Why has my pool turned greenish or green?

A greenish or fully green pool is almost always algae taking hold, usually triggered by low chlorine, a blocked or faulty filter, poor water circulation, storm debris, unbalanced water chemistry or a piece of broken equipment. We find the root cause first, not just treat the symptom!

How long does it take to fix a green pool?

It depends on your pool's size, equipment and how long it's been green. A pool that's only just turned green usually comes good much faster than one left for months or years. Rather than guess, we'll give you an honest estimate once we've seen it and the equipment. Either way, unlimited visits are included until your pool is genuinely clear and safe to swim in!

Do I need to drain a green pool?

Not always! Most green pools can be brought back to blue with shock treatment, brushing and filtration rather than a full drain, which carries its own risks for the pool shell and liner. However, if the pool has been green for a few years, this may be the best way to get your pool back looking like new! We'll advise you of this when we have a look.

Is algae in my pool dangerous to swim in?

A green, algae-affected pool isn't recommended for swimming. Poor sanitiser levels mean bacteria can also be present and cloudy water hides submerged hazards.

What's the difference between pool algaecide and a chlorine shock treatment?

Chlorine shock treatment rapidly raises sanitiser levels to kill algae and bacteria, while algaecide is a supplementary product that helps prevent regrowth afterwards. We use shock treatment as the primary fix, with algaecide and ongoing balancing to stop it returning.

Do you service green pools across all of Brisbane?

Yes. Our mobile technicians cover Brisbane's southern suburbs plus the wider Redlands and Bayside areas, working from our Willawong pool shop and warehouse. We are growing rapidly, so if you want to check if we do service your suburb, just reach out and we'll let you know!
