Top Reasons Pools Fail Their Safety Inspection (and How to Avoid Them)

Getting your pool safety certificate is a legal requirement in Queensland, but more than that, it's about protecting your family, your tenants and your peace of mind.
Unfortunately, many pool owners fail their first inspection for small, easily avoidable issues. At Pool Wizard, we’ve seen it all and we’re here to help you pass the first time around!
What are the top reasons why people fail their pool safety inspection?
1. Pool Gates That Don’t Self-Close or Latch
One of the most common failures is pool gates that don’t automatically shut and latch from every angle.
Tip: Give your gate a gentle push from different positions. If it doesn’t close and latch every time on its own, it will likely fail. Regular wear and tear or hinge tension are usually to blame (both fixable!).
2. Climbable Objects Near the Pool Fence
Plants, chairs, garden beds, pot plants, BBQs and even pool toys. Anything within 900mm of the outside of the fence that a child could use to climb over is considered non-compliant.
Tip: Take a slow walk around your pool area and look for anything a child could use as a step. If you’re not sure, take a photo and ask us. We’re happy to give free advice before your inspection.
3. Gaps in the Pool Fencing
Pool fences must be at least 1200mm high, with vertical gaps less than 100mm and no more than 100mm clearance under the bottom rail.
Tip: If your fence is older or built on uneven ground, double-check these measurements. Gaps caused by soil erosion or pets digging are surprisingly common.
4. Missing or Non-Compliant CPR Signage
The CPR sign must be clearly visible from the pool area, legible and display all required instructions.
Tip: Make sure your sign isn’t faded, covered or facing the wrong direction. If you’re not sure if your sign is compliant, we supply fully approved signs for just $35.
5. Gate Lock Too Low
Locks and latches need to be at least 1500mm above ground level (outside the pool area). Many older gates don’t meet this standard.
Tip: If you're unsure, measure from the ground up. If it’s under 1500mm, it’ll need adjustment or upgrading before your certificate can be issued.
Bonus: What to Do If You Fail?
Don’t panic! Failing doesn’t mean a fine right away. You’ll be given a Form 26 with details of what needs to be fixed and you’ll have 90 days to get it sorted and reinspected. With Pool Wizard, your first reinspection is free and we often offer on-the-spot fixes to help you pass right away.

Passing your pool safety inspection doesn’t have to be stressful, especially when you know what to look for. A quick check of these common issues before booking your inspection can save you time, money and hassle.
